Program: Cosmetology/Barbering
Hairdressers, hairstylists, cosmetologists and barbers offer a wide range of beauty services, such as shampooing, cutting, coloring, and styling hair. Cosmetologists/barbers are trained to give manicures, pedicures, scalp and facial treatments; provide makeup analysis; and clean and style wigs and hairpieces. In addition, students will learn hair design, human relations, effective communication and business management. Students will be prepared to pass the written and practical testing portions of the Utah/NIC Cosmetologist/Barber Exam.

Math and English levels:
Adult students will be assessed using the
Test of Adult Basic English (TABE) Locator
and Survey or through high school or
college transcripts. High School students
will be assessed by their counselor.
Occupation and Licensure Requirements
Cosmetologist/Barbers must be certified to
work in this field in the state of Utah. In order
to become certified students must:
• Complete 2,000 documented hours
• Graduate from a Utah licensed school
• Submit a “Verification of Graduation”
form to DOPL with processing fee
• Pass both written and practical testing portions
of the Utah/NIC
Cosmetologist/Barber Exam

coloring and perms
• Diseases and disorders of skin, nails,
hair, and scalp
• Implements, tools and equipment for
the cosmetologist/barber
• Disinfection and sterilization methods
and procedures
• Client and shop safety
