Course: Introduction to Information Technology (2010)
Course Description
This course is an overview of using computers. Students will gain an understanding of computers including their history, hardware, operating systems, program languages, software, networking, data storage, and system security. Students should recognize why computers are essential to the business community and to apply various technologies that are available to make them more effective.
Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient basic understand and operation of computers based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Skill Competence is available upon request.
This course fulfills requirements for the following Programs:

• Identify the major components of a computer and understand their function
• Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of various operating systems
• Discriminate between basic computing, data storage, database management, common
programming languages, multimedia technology and security risks
• Recognize the personal computer’s position as the backbone of business, the computer
industry and its use as a stand-alone or networked device.

This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.

The estimated length of this course is 90 hours. Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.

There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Information Technology Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services.
