Course: Procedural Coding I
Course Description
This course is designed to give the student experience in locating and assigning CPT codes for services rendered in a medical office. Procedural codes are necessary in receiving proper reimbursement for services rendered. The student needs to know the procedure for appropriately assigning codes, the procedures for reporting codes and reimbursement policies.
Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient understanding of procedural coding based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Skill Competence is available upon request.
This course is not a requirement for any Health Care Programs.
Competencies (skills you will learn)
• Read the source document and code from the information listed
• Identify the main term, sub-terms and modifying terms for the procedure to be coded
• Verify that the code matches the procedure statement provided in the record
• Accurately assign the proper CPT code

This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.
Course Length
The estimated length of this course is 90 hours. Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.

There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Health Care Technologies Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services.
