Course: Introduction to Pharmacology

 

Course Description

This course teaches the student to calculate medication dosages and administer parenteral and nonparenteral medications.

 

Certificate

Completion of this course certifies proficient understanding of the basic concepts and procedures of pharmacology based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Skill Competence is available upon request.

 

This course fulfills requirements for the following Programs:

     •   Clinical Medical Assistant

 

Competencies (skills you will learn)

     •   Correctly calculate accurate medication dosages

     •   Dispense oral medications

     •   Properly apply eye and ear medication drops

     •   Properly apply skin and topical medications

     •   Properly apply nasal medications

     •   Properly inject intradermal medications

     •   Properly inject subcutaneous medications

     •   Properly inject intramuscular medications

     •   Properly explain Z-tract injections

     •   Explain how to properly reconstitute powdered medications

     •   Explain the proper withdrawal of medication from an ampule

     •   Properly withdraw medication from a vial

 

Course Structure

This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.

 

Course Length

The estimated length of this course is 20 hours. Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.

 

Admission Requirements

There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Health Care Technologies Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services.

Tuition is based on the number of enrolled classroom hours. High school students are exempt from tuition, but are responsible for course and program fees and the cost of textbooks.
