Course: Hematology/Serology
Course Description
This course teaches the student proper handling and performance of hematology/serology labs.
Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient understanding of hemotology and serology based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Skill Competence is available upon request.
This course fulfills requirements for the following Programs:
• Clinical Medical Assistant
• ECG Technician
• Medical Office Laboratory Technician
Competencies (skills you will learn)
• Perform a skin puncture
• Properly perform Hemoccult testing
• Perform a Lancet puncture
• Explain the proper collection of a PKU specimen
• Perform a hematocrit and explain its value to the medical provider
• Explain the performance of a hemoglobin test and its value to the medical provider
• Perform a blood glucose
• Perform a blood smear
• Explain what is found on a WBC differential
• Properly perform ELISA tests (flu, mono, HCG, strep)
• Properly perform an ESR and explain its value to the medical provider
• Explain how ABO typing is performed
Course Structure
This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.
Course Length
The estimated length of this course is 20 hours. Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.
Admission Requirements
There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Health Care Technologies Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services.
