Course: Diagnostic Coding I

 

Course Description

This course is designed to give the student experience in locating and documenting the patient diagnosis. For a health care provider to be reimbursed for services provided a properly coded claim must be submitted that links the ICD-9-CM/ICD-10-CM codes with the CPT Codes. The student needs to know the procedure for appropriately assigning codes, the procedures for reporting codes and reimbursement policies.

 

Certificate

Completion of this course certifies proficient understanding of diagnostic coding based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Skill Competence is available upon request.

 

This course is not required for any Health Care Technologies Programs.

     •   Use the ICD-9-CM/ICD-10-CM book to locate the diagnosis

     •   Code the diagnosis correctly and accurately

     •   Document and validate professional services

 

Course Structure

This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.

 

Course Length

The estimated length of this course is 90 hours. Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.

There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Health Care Technologies Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services.
