Course: Assisting with the Urologic Examination
Course Description
Within the Clinical Medical Assisting Program are 14 courses that each focus on medical assisting within a specific medical area or specialty. Assisting with the Urologic Examination is one of these specialties. This course focuses on the urinary system and the functions and structure of the kidney. Students will learn how the bladder functions and the many tests done with urine. These tests can reveal diseases of the bladder or kidneys, systemic metabolic or endocrine disorders.
Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient Medical Assisting skills in the urologic examination based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Skill Competence is available upon request.
This course fulfills requirements for the following Programs:
• Clinical Medical Assistant
Competencies (skills you will learn)
• Understand the vocabulary and terminology used in urology
• Understand the anatomy and physiology of the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra
• How to administer tests including routine UA and pregnancy tests
• How to use a refractor to measure specific gravity
• Understand the diagnostic process and treatment of urinary problems
• Properly perform patient education for the urologic system
Course Structure
This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.
Course Length
The estimated length of this course is 15 hours. Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.
Admission Requirements
There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Health Care Technologies Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services. Assisting with the Urologic Examination is a required course that is recommended to be taken after the Assisting with the Gastroenterology Examination course.

Tuition is based on the number of enrolled classroom hours. High school students are exempt from tuition, but are responsible for course and program fees and the cost of textbooks.
