Course: Assisting with the Orthopedic Examination
Course Description
Within the Clinical Medical Assisting Program are 14 courses that each focus on medical assisting within a specific medical area or specialty. Assisting with the Orthopedic Examination is one of these specialties. This course focuses on understanding the musculoskeletal system, which includes all the bones, muscles, joints and supportive tissues and connective tissues. You will learn the anatomy and physiology of the cartilage, tendons, and ligaments. You will assist in diagnosis and treatment of injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. You will learn the names of all the bones in the body and distinguish between different kinds of fractures.
Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient Medical Assisting skills in the orthopedic examination based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Skill Competence is available upon request.

• Proper application and removal of splints, casts, wraps and braces

Course Structure
This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.
Course Length
The estimated length of this course is 15 hours. Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.
Admission Requirements
There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Health Care Technologies Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services. Assisting with the Orthopedic Examination is a required course that is recommended to be taken after the Assisting with the Allergy/Immunology Examination course.
