Course: Assisting with Minor Office Surgery

 

Course Description

Within the Clinical Medical Assisting Program are 14 courses that each focus on medical assisting within a specific medical area or specialty. Assisting with Minor Office Surgery is one of these specialties. This course focuses on how to set up a sterile field and assisting the physician with many procedures including circumcisions and suturing of simple lacerations. You will Assist in properly labeling and transporting of a biopsy.

 

Certificate

Completion of this course certifies proficient Medical Assisting skills in minor office surgery based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Skill Competence is available upon request.

 

This course fulfills requirements for the following Programs:

     •   Clinical Medical Assistant

 

Competencies (skills you will learn)

     •   Understand the vocabulary and terminology of minor office surgery

     •   Understand procedures and protocol for setting up a sterile field

     •   Know how to open a sterile pack and setup the instruments for the surgery

     •   Know the names and uses of surgical instruments used in a medical office

     •   Perform proper hand washing and donning of gloves

     •   Understand how to operate an autoclave for sterilization

     •   Properly perform patient education on surgeries and obtaining consents

 

Course Structure

This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.

 

Course Length

The estimated length of this course is 20 hours. Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.

 

Admission Requirements

There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Health Care Technologies Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services.

Tuition is based on the number of enrolled classroom hours. High school students are exempt from tuition, but are responsible for course and program fees and the cost of textbooks.
