Course: Assisting with the Gastroenterology Examination
Course Description
Within the Clinical Medical Assisting Program are 14 courses that each focus on medical assisting within a specific medical area or specialty. Assisting with the Gastroenterology Examination is one of these specialties. This course focuses on understanding the G.I. system and the diseases and disorders of the digestive system. You will learn the function and physiology of the small intestine, large intestine (colon) appendix and the accessory organs of the liver, gallbladder and pancreas.
Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient Medical Assisting skills in the gastroenterology examination based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Skill Competence is available upon request.

• Understand the vocabulary and terminology of gastroenterology
• Understand the digestive system and how it works
• Understand the esophageal and gastric disorders and their signs
• Recognize the symptoms, diagnostic testing and treatment of the G.I. system
• Work with patient cases in gastroenterology
• Properly perform patient education for the gastroenterology system
Course Structure
This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.
Course Length
The estimated length of this course is 15 hours. Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.
Admission Requirements
There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Health Care Technologies Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services. Assisting with the Gastroenterology Examination is a required course that is recommended to be taken after the Assisting with the Pediatric Examination course.
