Course: Assisting with the ENT Examination

 

Course Description

Within the Clinical Medical Assisting Program are 14 courses that each focus on medical assisting within a specific medical area or specialty. Assisting with the ENT Examination is one of these specialties. ENT stands for ears, nose and throat. You will assist the physician that treats the ears, including setting up hearing tests and balance tests. You will learn about diseases of the ears, also those pertaining to the nose, nasal obstruction, deviated septums and diseases of the nasal cavity and thoracic cage. You will assist in treating throat problems, including tonsillitis and chronic strep throat.

 

Certificate

Completion of this course certifies proficient Medical Assisting skills in the ENT examination based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Skill Competence is available upon request.

 

This course fulfills requirements for the following Programs:

     •   Clinical Medical Assistant

 

Competencies (skills you will learn)

     •   Understand the vocabulary and terminology of the ENT field

     •   Understand the anatomy and physiology of the ears, nose and throat

     •   Work with patients with diseases of ENT

     •   Understand how to properly administer drops to the ears and eyes

     •   Know how to properly perform and ear irrigation

     •   Know how to properly use an otoscope audiometer

     •   Properly perform patient education for the ears, nose and throat

 

Course Structure

This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.

 

Course Length

The estimated length of this course is 15 hours. Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.

 

Admission Requirements

There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Health Care Technologies Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services. Assisting with the ENT Examination is a required course that is recommended to be taken after the Assisting with the Dermatologic Examination course.

Tuition is based on the number of enrolled classroom hours. High school students are exempt from tuition, but are responsible for course and program fees and the cost of textbooks.
