Course: Assisting with the Dermatologic Examination
Course Description
Within the Clinical Medical Assisting Program are 14 courses that each focus on medical assisting within a specific medical area or specialty. Assisting with the Dermatologic Examination is one of these specialties. This course focuses on understanding the integumentary system, including the skin and its accessory organs. Dermatology also deals with the hair, the nails, sweat glands and the subcutaneous tissue that lies beneath the skin.
Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient Medical Assisting skills in the dermatologic examination based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Skill Competence is available upon request.

• Understand the vocabulary and terminology of the integumentary system
• Understand the physiology of the integumentary system and how it works
• Recognize skin disorders and diseases
• Recognize signs and symptoms, diagnostic testing of the integumentary system
• Record data in patient’s files
• Properly perform patient education for the integumentary system
Course Structure
This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.
Course Length
The estimated length of this course is 15 hours. Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.
Admission Requirements
There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Health Care Technologies Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services. Assisting with the Dermatologic Examination is a required course that is recommended to be taken after the Assisting with the Orthopedic Examination course.

Tuition is based on the number of enrolled classroom hours. High school students are exempt from tuition, but are responsible for course and program fees and the cost of textbooks.
