Course: Assisting with the Allergy/Immunology Examination
Course Description
Within the Clinical Medical Assisting Program are 14 courses that each focus on medical assisting within a specific medical area or specialty. Assisting with the Allergy/Immunology Examination is one of these specialties. This course focuses on allergy and immunology. Immunology is the study of components of the immune system and their function. Immunological therapy is administering repeated injections of diluted extracts of substances that cause allergies, also called desensitization.
Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient Medical Assisting skills in the allergy/immunology examination based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Skill Competence is available upon request.
This course fulfills requirements for the following Programs:
• Clinical Medical Assistant
Competencies (skills you will learn)
• Understand the vocabulary and terminology of the immune system
• Understand the pathophysiology of the immune system
• Work with patient cases
• Understand HIV testing and legal issues with this disease
• Be able to administer injections for allergy testing
• Know how to give allergy injections and recognize anaphylactic shock
• Properly perform patient education in allergies and immunology
Course Structure
This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.
Course Length
The estimated length of this course is 15 hours. Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.
Admission Requirements
There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Health Care Technologies Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services. Assisting with the Allergy/Immunological Examination is a required course that is recommended to be taken after the Assisting with the Pulmonary Examination course.
